Kerala is a state located on the southwestern coast of India, known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and unique traditions. It’s often called “God’s Own Country” due to its natural beauty, which includes lush backwaters, pristine beaches, dense forests, and hill stations like Munnar.
It is the largest waterfall in Kerala, ( 81.5 feet tall) and is nicknamed as the Niagara of South India, which is visited by about 7 million tourists each year. It is situated in the border of Ernakulam District, in Kerala, India on the Chalakudy River. Athirapally Waterfalls offers a breathtaking view from both the top and bottom, showcasing its sheer power and beauty. Surrounded by lush greenery, it stands as a natural wonder captivating the hearts of nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike. The top viewpoint of the falls is just a 10 minute walk from the main entrance. However, going down to the bottom of the falls involves a 20-minute trek through muddy steep narrow path or a wide staired path. It’s important to note that individuals with mobility issues or breathing difficulties should avoid the trek down to the waterfall. The water flow at the falls can vary depending on the time of year. After February, the flow may be less. To see a higher water flow, the best time to visit is from June to December. Bathing in the falls is not allowed, and it can be risky due to changing water conditions. Although post-February visits are allowed to enter in the water due to lower water flow. Visiting will be restricted during certain times, especially during the monsoon season or when the dam is opened. The area can get crowded during long weekends and holiday time. There are couple of small water falls just a short drive from Athirapilly water falls, which are Vazhachal Falls and Charpa Falls ( which is on the way to Vazhachal Falls) .
