Kerala is a state located on the southwestern coast of India, known for its rich cultural heritage, stunning landscapes, and unique traditions. It’s often called “God’s Own Country” due to its natural beauty, which includes lush backwaters, pristine beaches, dense forests, and hill stations like Munnar.

Houseboating in Alleppey (Alappuzha), Kerala, is a unique and unforgettable experience! It’s one of the most popular ways to explore the tranquil backwaters of Kerala. The backwaters are a network of lagoons, lakes, and rivers, surrounded by lush green landscapes, small villages, and rich wildlife.

A houseboat in Kerala is a traditional, floating vessel that is used for leisure cruises, primarily in the backwaters of Kerala, a state in southern India. These houseboats are also known as kettuvallams in Malayalam, the local language. Originally, kettuvallams were used to transport goods, but they have now been converted into luxurious boats for tourism.

Key Features of Kerala Houseboats:

  1. Floating Accommodation: Houseboats are equipped with bedrooms, bathrooms, a living area, a kitchen, and sometimes even a sun deck. Some are designed with traditional wooden interiors while others offer modern amenities.

  2. Scenic Cruise: The houseboats sail through the tranquil backwaters, passing through lush landscapes, coconut groves, paddy fields, small villages, and lakes. Some popular regions for houseboat tours include Alleppey (Alappuzha), Kumarakom, and Kottayam.

  3. Luxury and Comfort: Many houseboats are designed with luxurious features like air-conditioning, fine dining, and room service. Some offer specialty services like fishing, cultural performances, and Ayurvedic treatments.

  4. Cultural Experience: As you cruise, you get to experience the local life of Kerala’s rural communities, interact with fishermen, and enjoy fresh, authentic Kerala cuisine made on board, such as seafood, coconut-based dishes, and traditional Kerala meals.

  5. Eco-tourism: Many houseboats are eco-friendly, designed to minimize environmental impact and promote sustainable tourism in the region.

A houseboat experience in Kerala offers a unique way to explore the region’s natural beauty and cultural richness while enjoying a relaxing and serene atmosphere.

Tips
  • If you want to use Canal Sikkara, speak to the House Boat people before hand, so they will be able to arrange it for you.
  • There are lots of speed boards available around that area. Don’t miss that opportunity. You don’t need to have any advance booking.
  • House Boat does stop near to small shop, from where you can purchase, fishes, shrimps and crabs. The boat chef is normally happy to cook it for you.
  • Even though there is an option for night stay, I didn’t prefer to stay overnight because I was told it can be bit boring. Budget homestay is a good alternative.
